Special Project #3

For The People

A public awareness initiative preparing communities for the 2027 Medicaid work requirement changes — impacting up to 18.5 million adults ages 19–64 who may need to prove 80 hours per month of qualifying activity to maintain health coverage.

For The People — Medicaid Awareness

Why This Initiative Matters

18.5 Million Affected

Starting no later than January 1, 2027, adults ages 19–64 on Medicaid may need to prove 80 hours/month of work, education, volunteering, or job training to keep their coverage.

Know · Check · Act

ForThePeople.Work breaks the changes into three clear steps: understand what's changing, check whether it applies to you, and act before the deadline — with guides in 8 languages.

Community-First Approach

The platform equips professionals, nonprofits, faith leaders, educators, and interns with role-specific talking points, action steps, and downloadable offline guides to reach people where they are.

The Medicaid Changes

Federal legislation requires states to implement work requirements for certain Medicaid recipients effective January 1, 2027. Adults ages 19–64 may need to document 80 hours per month of qualifying activities — paid work, job training, education, community service, or approved combinations — to maintain eligibility.

  • Eligibility renewals move to every 6 months
  • Multiple exemption categories exist (children, elderly, pregnant, disabled, caregivers, tribal members, veterans, and more)
  • Each state administers its own program — rules vary by state
  • Recipients must proactively verify their status and update contact info now

ForThePeople.Work Platform

Voice Up Publishing built ForThePeople.Work as a comprehensive, multilingual awareness platform to help individuals and organizations understand and prepare for these changes. The site includes interactive tools, professional guides, and community resources.

  • Quick reference guides in 8 languages (English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Chinese, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi)
  • Zip-code search for nearby health centers and Medicaid offices
  • Role-specific strategic guides for 9 community roles (interns, pastors, medical providers, educators, and more)
  • Paid internship program placing awareness workers in communities
  • Live curated news feed from trusted sources (NPR, PBS, Kaiser Health News, AP)

Consultant Context for Review

As you evaluate this initiative, consider the following dimensions that make this project critical in the current healthcare policy landscape:

Scale of Impact

Up to 18.5 million adults could be affected by the work requirement. Many may not know the changes are coming or understand whether they qualify for exemptions. The gap between policy implementation and public awareness is the core challenge this project addresses.

Health Equity & Access

Medicaid disproportionately serves communities of color, rural populations, and individuals with lower incomes. Work requirements risk creating coverage gaps for people facing systemic barriers to employment — including those with chronic illness, caregiving responsibilities, or transportation limitations.

Multilingual & Multi-Role Design

The platform provides guides in 8 languages and tailored strategic communications for 9 different community roles — from interns to executive directors. Consider the effectiveness and cultural competency of this approach for reaching diverse populations.

Community Mobilization Model

Rather than direct lobbying, this initiative focuses on information equity — ensuring every affected person has access to accurate, plain-language information about changes that affect their healthcare. The paid internship program places awareness workers directly in communities.
