REQUIRED
1. Professional Liability / Errors & Omissions

Minimum: $1,000,000 per claim

This is the principal mandatory insurance requirement. Professional liability is directly connected to the service being purchased: professional mentoring and consulting. Because the service occurs entirely online, the greatest identifiable exposure arises from what the consultant says, advises, recommends, represents, or fails to do.

Potential allegations covered:

  • •Negligent advice or guidance
  • •Errors or omissions
  • •Failure to perform contracted services
  • •Misrepresentation of professional guidance
  • •Breach of professional responsibilities
  • •Inappropriate recommendations
  • •Confidentiality violations
  • •Claims that advice resulted in harm

The policy must specifically recognize: consulting, adult mentoring, career development, professional development, leadership development, coaching, and educational services.

CONDITIONAL
2. Commercial General Liability

Standard (when required): $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate

Not automatically required for virtual-only engagements. Traditional bodily injury and property damage exposures are substantially reduced because:

  • •Participants do not visit the consultant
  • •Consultants do not visit participants
  • •There are no program facilities
  • •There are no physical mentoring activities
  • •Services are delivered entirely through electronic communication

CGL becomes required when institutional partners, universities, funders, or the organization's existing insurance program mandate it.

RISK-BASED
3. Cyber Liability

Potentially more important than general liability in a completely virtual model. Risk increases when contractors independently possess:

  • •Participant applications or personal contact information
  • •Evaluations, assessments, or recordings
  • •Confidential communications
  • •Educational or personally identifiable information
  • •Databases containing participant information

Preferred strategy: Minimize participant information stored by contractors. Use organization-approved systems and do not download, retain, or independently store unnecessary participant information.

NOT REQUIRED
4. Coverage Not Required for Virtual Services

Abuse & Molestation

Population is entirely adults; mentoring occurs exclusively online. Traditional youth-program exposure is not present.

Automobile Liability

Transportation is not part of the contracted service. Will be reconsidered if scope changes to include travel.

FELLOWSHIP PATH
5. Leadership Fellowship — Insurance Waived

Fellows are NOT required to maintain Professional Liability, General Liability, or any other insurance coverage. As currently enrolled students gaining applied professional experience, Fellows operate under the educational and mentorship framework. The nature of fellowship deliverables (research, analysis, writing, consultation) does not create the same liability exposure as licensed professional services.

6. Operational Safeguards (All Paths)

Because the program is virtual, contractual and operational controls are particularly important. All contractors shall:

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality
  • Conduct mentoring through approved communication methods
  • Safeguard participant information
  • Refrain from recording sessions without authorization and consent
  • Avoid presenting mentoring as psychotherapy, medical treatment, or legal advice unless qualified
  • Report significant incidents or complaints
  • Comply with nondiscrimination, anti-harassment, privacy, and conflict-of-interest requirements
7. Insurance Assistance Bonus

A one-time, need-based bonus of $100.00 is available to contractors who cannot otherwise afford to secure Professional Liability/E&O coverage.

  • •Written notification at time of signing
  • •Completion of online Insurance Assistance Request form
  • •Proof of coverage within 60 days of receiving the bonus
